What is Open Source?

This is the first post in a series on open source and it's importance. As the following posts are added to my blog I will link to them from this one.
The quote from Wikipedia is a great introduction to Open Source. Most of the time the term open source is applied only to computer code that is freely available, but it is also a model of operation. By not withholding information or important materials we are able to collaborate on work to ensure a larger, more stable and more amazing product.
